Archbishop Paul Khumalo resigns

The Holy Father had accepted the resignation from the Pastoral Governance of the Archdiocese of Pretoria presented by the Most Reverend Paul Mandla Khumalo CMM, in conformity with Canon 401,2 of the Code of Canon Law. He has appointed Reverend Monsignor Abel Gabuza as Apostolic Administrator, sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis (the seat is vacant and the Administrator remains in authority at the pleasure of the Holy See). At the same time, the Holy Father had accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the diocese of Kimberley, presented by the Right Reverend Erwin Hecht OMI in conformity with canon 401,1 of the Code of Canon Law. He has appointed the Most Reverend Jabulani Adatus Nxumalo, OMI, Metropolitan Archbishop of Bloemfontein, as Apostolic Administrator.
 

Murder of Fr Louis Blondel in Diepsloot, Pretoria

Father Louis BlondelFather Louis Blondel was shot dead in his presbytery in Diepsloot during the night 6th/7th December 2009. Four people had allegedly broken into Presbytery. Father Louis, 70, was member of the Missionaries of Africa, a french society of Catholic missionaries dedicated to serving the people of Africa.

   

A new library for St John Vianney Seminary

Archbishop Jabulani Nxumalo, Chairman of the Seminaries’ Department of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, presided at the sod turning of the new library of the Saint John Vianney Seminary in Pretoria, on the 25th of November. All the students and the staff were present, as well as Archbishop Paul Khumalo of Pretoria, Fr Vincent Brennan (secretary general of the SACBC), Sr Hermenegild Makoro (associate secretary general of the SACBC) and the members of the finance management Committee of the bishops’ Conference.
   

Bishop Lenhof resigns

The Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Queenstown, South Africa, presented by Bishop Herbert Nikolaus Lenhof S.A.C., in accordance with canon 401 para. 2 of the Code of Canon Law. Bishop Lenhof of Queenstown has been struggling with his health for a number of years.
   

Giuseppe Sandri, new bishop of Witbank

The Holy Father appointed Father Giuseppe Sandri, MCCJ, as the new bishop of Witbank. This diocese was without a bishop since the appointement of Bishop Paul Mandla Khumalo, CMM, in Pretoria, in November 2008. Details of the ordination are still to be finalised. The newly appointed bishop was born at Faedo (diocese of Trent) in Italy on 28 August 1946.

The Church Leaders of South Africa enthusiastically participated in a frank and open discussion with Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi and National Commissioner of Police, Bheki Cele at the Southern Sun Intercontinental Hotel at the OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on 27 October 2009. Church Leaders described the meeting as honest and refreshing.

By benevolent decision of the Holy Father Benedict XVI, the General Secretariate of the Synod of Bishops has been authorized to publish the unofficial version of the Propositions of the II Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops on the theme The Church in Africa at the Service of Reconciliation, Justice and Peace. “You are the salt of the earth ... You are the light of the world” (Mt 5:13,14).

Well it finished as it began in the splendor of St. Peter's Basilica, the Synod Fathers surrounding the Holy Father in a Eucharist of gratitude and hope. The final ceremony that gave closure to three weeks of hard work. We joined the Pope for the Angelus at 12.00, on St. Peter's Square, where thousands had gathered, all of us dressed in the same chasuble, given as it was as a present from the Holy Father to each one of us.
