Synod for Africa: Arch. Tlhagale's intervention

Monday, 12 October 2009 14:14

In the Instrumentum Laboris, the question of inculturation is barely touched upon. And yet Ecclesia in Africa categorically stated that inculturation is a sine qua non in the work of evangelization. Without inculturation, there is neither genuine evangelization nor genuine reconciliation. After all, "the gospel is grounded in the human terrain of culture" (I.L. 73).

Monday, 12 October 2009 08:52

Fr. Sean O'Leary of the Denis Hurley Peace Institute, speaking at the Synod for Africa in Rome on Saturday (full text available here) proposed a group of eminent persons to act as 'Peace Elders' to help resolve conflicts in Africa. Pointing out how many of the Bishops present at the Synod had real experience of African Conflicts, Father O'Leary proposed that the Catholic Church on the African Continent becomes more visible and active in Peace interventions.

Synod for Africa: Bishop Wustenberg's intervention

Thursday, 08 October 2009 14:03

Laity and hierarchy are often not in one accord. Reconciliation is needed within the Church. A Pastoral Plan led to the development of a better community. This reconciliation within the Church affected the evangelizing commitment of the laity to reconciling a broken world. Unity and cooperation of the Bishops' Conference support the laity in networking. Small Christian Communities -- rooted in faith -- network in the social field for transforming society at local level. This commitment happens also through various institutions. With a widely observed lack of deeper catechesis such commitment in "all strata of humanity" needs thorough formation.

Concern at Kennedy Road Killings: Bishop Barry Wood

Monday, 05 October 2009 10:19

I would like to add my voice and that of the Justice and Peace Department of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference to Bishop Rubin Phillip’s Statement on the Kennedy Road violence. The Kennedy Road killings and violence are of great concern. Reports of Militia being allowed to operate with impunity and a perceived partisan role by the South African Police Service in the area require immediate investigation.
