US delegation to visit Southern African Catholic Church

A delegation of two bishops and 8 lay people from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) arrived in South Africa on 29 August 2009. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick will join the delegation later, being asked to preside at Teddy Kennedy’s funeral. They’ll be visiting projects that they are funding in Southern Africa, until the 5 September 2009. On the first day of their trip, they met the heads of Departments of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Khanya House, Pretoria. It was an opportunity to present the situation and the needs of the Catholic Church in Southern Africa. Family life desk: A programme of awareness-raising about Marriage

From 23rd August to Marriage Day on 4th October 2009, the Family life desk runs a programme of awareness-raising about Marriage and Family life, titled “Marriage and Family, growing together”. Toni Rowland, in charge for the Family life desk at the SACBC, published a 17 pages resource pack “designed to help you and your local Church get the maximum benefit out of this time to help couples and families to grow together.”
   

The State of the Priesthood in Southern Africa

The representatives of the Priests of the territory of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference held their Annual General Meeting at the Mariannhill Monastery, Kwa Zulu Natal from 17 to 21 August 2009. Delegates from 25 diocese joined SACOP liaison Bishop, Bishop Steven Brislin of Kroonstad for a week of reflection and fellowship. 
   

2009 Lenten Appeal: increase of 5%

The Lenten Appeal desk just finished collecting the donations from the dioceses. This year, despite of the recession, Catholics have been more generous than 2008, donating more than R7.5 million (5% more than 2008). The money will be allocated to different projects of the Church in South Africa, in accordance to the needs. This Includes the poor and needy, education, health, priestly and lay formation, peace initiatives, catechetical formation, and Ecumenical projects, etc. These contributions will help towards the total Mission of the Church. Each year, during Lent, the Bishops Lenten Appeal is promoted to all parishes in all the dioceses, proposing a demonstration in supporting the Lent Appeal with an annual pledge. Plenary Session: photos and documents

The southern african catholic bishops finished their second plenary session of the year, on the 12th of August 2009 in Mariannhill. On the last day,they finalised the redaction of the resolutions among which the proposition of a Synod for the Conference (see Archbishop Buti Tlhagale opening speech). The day before, the bishops re-elected Archbishop Buti as the President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC), and Archbishop Jabulani Nxumalo as the first vice-Prestident. Election of the president of the SACBC

In a very quick election, Archbishop Buti Tlhagale OMI, Archbishop of Johannesburg, was unanimously re-elected as President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC). He will commence his second term as President at the end of the January 2010 Plenary. First Vice President will be Archbishop Jabulani Nxumalo OMI, Archbishop of Bloemfontein. The Second Vice President will be Bishop Steven Brislin of Kroonstad Diocese. Elections for Department Chairmen and Liaison Bishops will take place at the January 2010 Plenary session.

   

Bishops' Plenary Session: focus on life and ministry of priests

Friday’s session of the Southern African Catholic Bishops conference focussed on the Life and Ministry of Priests. The Ongoing Formation Committee continued the discussion on a research project on the life and ministry of Priests in Southern Africa. The idea caused quite a stir. The Bishops felt it was very necessary to commission this study and agreed to the process and voted to financially back the project. All the Priests in Southern Africa will be involved and the programme will take at least 3 years.

   

For Priests, this might be the more important than the Football World Cup!

To close the Year of the Priest, Pope Benedict has called for a Pilgrimage of Priests to Rome in June 2010.

Details have been discussed in the Plenary meeting of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) currently happening in Mariannhill. Further discussions with the Southern African Council of Priests (SACOP)will take place at its AGM 17-21 August, again at Mariannhill.

But there is real problem!

   

SA Bishops focus on administration issues and conflict situations in Africa

The first day of the Bishops Conference Plenary Session in Mariannhill focused on administration issues and conflict situations in Africa. The Secretary General’s report, outlined particularly the Formation of Priests and pointing out a number of issues around good governance. A new manual on Good Governance was proposed for implementation in the territory. Following a request from the Southern African Council of Priests and the Conference itself, three options for medical coverage were proposed to the Conference. There was also an extended discussion on the scope and job description of the Fundraising Office of the Conference. Fr Brian Reid of the Archdiocese of Durban has been appointed as the first fundraiser for the Conference.
