SACBC's President expresses concern that the Political situation in Swaziland

Thursday, 27 May 2010 12:49

As President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, I was shocked to hear of the death in detention in Swaziland of Sipho Jele on 4 May 2010. He had been arrested for wearing a PUDEMO (Peoples United Democratic Movement) t-shirt during the May Day celebration in Manzini.  The authorities are claiming that he committed suicide whilst in custody; however, the family of the deceased together with civil society organisations dispute this.  This tragedy reminds us of apartheid tactics that were used against those who were challenging the Status Quo in South Africa.

Two archbishops (including the outgoing co-president, the Archbishop of Kinshasa), several bishops, a papal representative (who delivered a warm greeting from the pope), and laity, nuns and priests working for peace in many parts of the world gathered as part of the universal Church at the Pax Christi International Triennial World Assembly in Strasbourg, France. South Africa was represented by Bishop Kevin Dowling (now elected as new co-president of the movement) and John Ashworth, Acting Director of the Denis Hurley Peace Institute. Human trafficking: Archbishop Buti challenges the Government

Tuesday, 11 May 2010 15:39

About 1000 people gathered on Saturday 8 May 2010 in Pretoria to pray for an end to human trafficking, on the eve of the FIFA World Cup. Children from many Catholic schools were present, as well as parishes and other organisations. Among the invited guests were Advocate Malebo Kotu-Rammopo, from the National Prosecution Authority, and Mr. Colin Wrafter, Ambassador of Ireland in South Africa. The gathering was a great opportunity to draw the attention of all South Africans "about the plight of children and women who are victims of human trafficking" said Archbishop Buti Tlhagale in a strong homily, accusing the Government and many South Africans of "hypocrisy" and "complicity".

Homily for the mass to pray for an end to Human Trafficking

Saturday, 08 May 2010 14:30

We celebrate this Eucharist on the eve of the FIFA world Cup. We seek to draw the attention of all South Africans and our visitors about the plight of children and women who are victims of human trafficking and especially of those who become victims during this world cup event. Such an event, though highly admirable in itself, brings out the worst in some human beings. Men and women without integrity, see an opportunity to make a fortune by selling children and women for sexual pleasures of men who probably care less about the games themselves.

Friday, 07 May 2010 12:37

The Project Caritas appeal for Haiti, launched by the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference in January 2010, has topped the R2 Million mark (€ 200.000). The Appeal was launched in response to the devastation caused by the Haiti earthquake. Apart from minor administration expenses (around R4.000), the money has been sent to Catholic Relief Services for the ongoing disaster relief and rehabilitation work in Haiti. The Administration costs represent less than 1% of the total raised.

St Thérèse in South Africa!

Wednesday, 05 May 2010 09:39

For the first time ever, the Relics of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux - of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face - are in South Africa, from June till end of September 2010. The impulse came from the Catholic Youth of the Parish Saint Francis of Assisi in Yeoville, Archdiocese of Johannesburg, deeply inspired by the Saint in their faith, and encouraged by her spiritual “Little Way”, as she is one of the youngest Saints of all times.
