Giuseppe Sandri, new bishop of Witbank

The Holy Father appointed Father Giuseppe Sandri, MCCJ, as the new bishop of Witbank. This diocese was without a bishop since the appointement of Bishop Paul Mandla Khumalo, CMM, in Pretoria, in November 2008. Details of the ordination are still to be finalised. The newly appointed bishop was born at Faedo (diocese of Trent) in Italy on 28 August 1946.

He made his first profession in the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus on 15 August 1968 and his solemn profession on 15 August 1971. He was ordained priest on 27 May 1972.

After a few months assisting in the Parish of Acornhoek (Witbank), Father Giuseppe was parish priest in Waterval-Bushbuckbridge (1972-1978), Lydenburg (1981-1986) and in Witbank (1986-1992). He was elected as Provincial of the Comboni Missionaries in South Africa for two mandates (1993-1995 and 1996-1998).  Following these, Father Giuseppe was appointed Secretary General of his Congregation in Rome, a position he held from 1999 to 2007.

The Bishop-elect has Master’s Degree in Theology from the University of Cincinnati in the United States of America and speaks Italian, English, French, Sotho, Sepedi and Tsonga.

He is currently the Provincial of the Comboni Missionaries in South Africa.

Thanks kedebone for sharing the same sentiments, but it would seem as if you are saying African priests are not credible enough to hold the office of being bishops because of their lifesyle. To some extent you might be right, but there are some credible African priests in South Africa, but sometimes what is credible to the human eye is not always God's choice. You seem to be saying what is wrong with black priests, why are they not obtaining this positions, there is nothing wrong with African priests. Its not always easy to convince the mind why a particular job was entrusted to someone and not the other, and to tell the other there is nothing wrong with them, that there is no mistake on ones part at all. Sure we need more South African Bishops credible and competent, easy to relate with on a cultural level, sure we need to be true to the spirit of incarnation, sure we should seek to be true Africans and True Christians. But we also need to have more trust in the work of the Holy spirit, I strongly believe God is work in the evolution of church structure otherwise I would not be Catholic, but I call upon you to pray for your priests. what about the lifesytle of priests? my answer, as one of them: "We have this treasure in earthen vessels to show that the transcendent power belongs to God not to us . . .(2cor4:7-15) Sin will always be there to pinch us, to remind its his work not ours, we are of no worth because of sin yet He has qualified us in Christ, made us worthy and thus we are worthy to be in God's crib-mansion inspite of ourselves, read further Mt 20:20-28. And yes I still feel that Comboni's Dream of saving Africa through Africa has been postponed, for now lets celebrate with the Diocese of Witbank and Bishop elect Sandri.
Daniel Comboni's Dream Deferred

I really do share the same feelings with Ntate Edward. Infact, for me i think that the questions must be asked to our africans priest. Or, should I say that, our african clergy must asked themselves some questions, why for the last fivo or so nominations, the majoirty of the bishop elect are not south africans. well, I do beleive that it is the HOLY SPIRIT that inspire the chirch to choose it leaders. well, let us put Comboni dream aside. Because I think that our clergy must relook at their own life style as priests. And, find out if they are really faithfull to their promises( chastioty in a special way and obedience). Well, I am not the one to judge or condemn, but, I beleive that we knwo the criteria to choose the bishop and I beleive that many of the south africans clergy Comboni ws dreaming about in his dream are capable to be bishops, if they are to be faithfull in to their vocatios and to the HOLY SPIRIT.
All the best to the newly elect Bishop and many more blessinsg to my beloved diocese of Witbank. save african with africans..

Daniel Comboni's Dream Deferred

I am not sure whether to embrace the news of our recently ordained Bishops with ululation or despondency, yet as a good Catholic may I say all praise to God who gives us shepherds after his own heart. Who am I to question God's generosity? Yet I feel deep down that the dream of St. Daniel Comboni has in indeed been postponed, to "Save Africa with Africa." I wish Bishop-elect the best in his new mission may he help us to realize Comboni's Dream. "God Bless Africa and her sons and daughters."
