Haiti needs our help – let’s pull out all the stops

Dear Friends,
I visited Haiti for a month a number of years ago. Haiti is one of the poorest places – poorer than many of the countries in Africa - that I have visited. A very unstable government and a turbulent history have left the people of Haiti impoverished. Adding to an already desperate situation, are the horrific consequences of Tuesdays’ Earthquake. These have been made even worse by the fact that most of the city of Port-au-Prince is built on hillsides. So, it is these areas of housing for residents that are the worst affected.
On behalf of Project Caritas in Southern Africa, which is part of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, we appeal to your generosity.
Reports from Haiti indicate that sending aid in kind is not practical as airport and port facilities are in no condition to cope with the large influx of good that is expected.
In order to ensure the swiftest and most effective aid to the People of Haiti, we will be co-operating with a number of other organizations such as ‘Gift of the Giver’ foundation, who helped us get our aid to the Palestinian People during their moment of need (January 2009).
This is an urgent humanitarian emergency so we ask you to contribute generously as we reach out to the people of Haiti. Your monetary donations via Project Caritas in Southern Africa will be used to provide support to various disaster relief and aid organizations in Haiti.
In Christ,
