Catholic Church in South Africa Takes Over HIV Care

Last week, South Africa celebrated, near Johannesburg, an important HIV milestone. Due to excellent partnership and program execution, management of a very large U.S. grant supporting HIV care and treatment for more than 60,000 people is shifting from the international hands of the CRS-led AIDSRelief consortium into the local hands of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), St. Mary’s Hospital, and the Institute for Youth Development-South Africa.

“This event honors the commitment and success of the Catholic Church in caring for the world’s largest population of people with HIV. About 150 people attended, including officials from the Catholic Church, South African government, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control,” said CRS South Africa Country Representative Ruth Stark. “The program ended with most of us in tears when a 12-year-old orphan told the audience about his life and how the services he had received had supported him, emotionally as well as materially. He concluded by saying how happy he was to have had the opportunity to share his story, adding ‘I want to look you in the eye and thank you.’” (source: Catholic Relief Services)

Speeches available on line: Bishop Kevin Dowling (Rustenberg), Bishop Frank Nubuasah (Francistown, Botswana) and Sister Alison Munro (SACBC Aids Office).

Photos of the event are available on the SACBC's facebook page. The Associated Press also covered the event, reprinted by the New York Times.

Good work done. But you did not tell us how many people you succeeded to change or adhered like you mentioned in your report. Meeting people in different places does not mean that their behaviour have suddenly changed like your report claimed.

Thank you for letting us know. Our Sisters are very active in Africa, esp. in Namibia and Tanzania, in turning the epidemic around.
I am very glad that the Catholic Church is taking over the care and management of HIV in the Republic of S.A. Since I had been a teacher at Inkamana for 14 years, I have been following the political change-over and all that followed since. I wish and pray for the recovery of that dear land!
Gratefully,
Sr. Marita Schweiger, OSB
Now in USA, retired, but busy!
Congratulations

This recognition is certainly merited. It's wonderful that the Catholic Church's ministry to people with HIV. May all those who are working in this ministry be blessed.
