The South African Catholic Church is on the ball!

The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference has launched a new website www.churchontheball.com to prepare for the 2010 Football World Cup. It will be a central reference site for information on what the Catholic Church is doing in Southern Africa and to offer information on the churches and communities near the stadiums.
The Catholic Church in South Africa wants to seize the opportunity of the World Cup ‘to highlight the important role that sport plays in our African cultures’ said Cardinal Wilfrid Napier on the home page of the website. ‘Sport requires practice, patience, perseverance, respect, all values which our societies, and particularly Africa, much need! All values that the Church does not cease to advocate: Charity, dialogue with other religions and cultures, love of neighbour, etc.’
News and features will be regularly published on www.churchontheball.com. A virtual chapel where fans can leave prayer intentions for their teams will also be soon available. Virtual candles will be lit for R10 donation. The money will go directly to charity project within the South African Church. ‘This is a fun way for fans to contribute to the life of the Catholic Church in our country" says Fr Chris Townsend, Information Officer of the SACBC. ‘We can't miss this opportunity’, he added. ‘We want to make them proud of being Catholics when they'll see what we're doing here’.
