South Africa and the State of Play for the 2010 World Cup

Thursday, 21 January 2010 10:06

DHPI World cup 2010There is no doubt that an air of optimism and expectation is gaining momentum daily in South Africa as the country fast approaches the dawn of the first World Cup tournament ever to be played on African soil. The tournament is clearly seen as an African event and a mass publicity campaign express this but the rewards, and there will be many, are clearly for South Africa.

FIFA World Cup 2010: A South African Justice and Peace perspective

Tuesday, 01 December 2009 10:30

When South Africa won the bid for the 2010 World Cup in May 2004, there was euphoria in the country. There was great pride that we had been bestowed the honour to host the biggest sporting event in the world for the first time ever in Africa. Since then, virtually all departments of the state have been drawn into the preparation process, and “2010” became the rallying point for plans and activities in all dimensions of life in the country.

2010 World Cup: blow your trumpet!

Thursday, 29 October 2009 12:26

Sitting down to write about the world cup keeps bringing up one sound – that of the vuvuzela, that uniquely South African approach to joy and intimidation. The ConFed cup might well have left more than a few of us with ringing ears. So I looked up trumpeting in my concordance and the results reinforced what we as Church and Believers should be doing in preparation for the Football.

October: month of Mission

Wednesday, 30 September 2009 16:11

During October we traditionally celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday 18th October. Many dioceses give the whole month of October a ‘Mission’ focus. I personally appreciate this very much as one cannot emphasize too much the need of being a Missionary Church. The Holy Father, John Paul II, in his encyclical letter ‘Redemptoris Missio’ puts the question “Why Mission?” and stresses in his answer that “the Church, and each individual Christian within her, may not keep hidden or monopolize this newness and richness which has been received from God’s bounty in order to be communicated to all mankind” (nr. 11).

New English Texts for Rites of Ordination

Monday, 28 September 2009 11:29

Communiqué 5

In August 2008 the SACBC adopted for use in Southern Africa the US Conference translation of the Ordination rites. This decision means that in our Conference area the rites of Ordination as revised in 1989 will now become the norm.

Another look at the new Mass texts

Thursday, 06 August 2009 19:18

4th Communiqué

In this article I would like to look at some of the words which the new translation has brought back into the Mass texts. But firstly, I would like to explain why the bishops of Southern Africa went ahead of other bishops’ conferences in the implementation of the new Mass texts. The Conference viewed the implementation of the new third edition of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the renewal of the Mass texts as a unity. The original time frames made it a wonderful opportunity to engage the faithful in our dioceses in the renewal of the liturgical celebration of the Holy Mass.
