Anglican Church of Southern Africa

My dear brothers in Christ

As you may know I have been in North Wales for the last month, following the Full Ignatian Spiritual Exercises at the St Beuno’s retreat centre. Today is our repose day at the end of the retreat, and so we have received the news of the decision of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI to step down at the end of the month.

I am therefore writing to convey to you, on behalf of all Anglicans in Southern Africa, my assurances of our prayers, both for the Pope as he moves into retirement, and for the Catholic Church as you prepare to elect his successor. May the Lord lead and guide all your deliberations, and send you a faithful pastor and shepherd of his flock.

It has been a profound experience for me to experience such hospitality and fellowship at St Beuno’s, and brought me into new understandings of our Lord’s Prayer that we ‘might be one, so that the world may believe’.
May we, in our own context, do what we can to respond to this yearning in the heart of God.
