The Catholic Church in Southern Africa Protection Policy and Procedures for Minors

The Catholic Church is not satisfied with merely responding to the sexual abuse of the young. It seeks to safeguard and protect the young from any form of abuse. The primary responsibility for the safety and well-being of children lies with the parents and the immediate family, but the parents need the active support of the whole community, and an important part of that community is the Church. Ministry to the young is an essential part of the mission of the Church, given to it by Christ Himself.

This Policy is a work in process and has been approved by the Bishops with the following status:

The Conference accepts in principle the SACBC Policy on “Safeguarding our Children” and resolves that, after further editing by the Committee, the policy be discussed by the Troika and LCCL(SA) Executive together before being submitted to the May 2012 Administrative Board meeting for promulgation. (Plenary Resolution 1.8 January 2012).
